It depends on quality of the back links you have. A lesser number is required if you manage to get high quality links.I think 1000 links are required at least to have PR6.

i seen a few website that have high page rank and very few web links maybe if googles like your site they mite give you a high PR with very little backlinks.

Yes, even a lesser amount of backlinks can also give us a page rank4-6. And that is possible if the links are from either high page rank sites or sites with high authority, like from .edu or .gov

There are very few pages with a high page rank ..it will be rated for sites with extension.Edu or .gov as these sites will contain a good page rank..

Achieving a PR 6 is very, very hard.

You'll need thousands of backlinks, not just a few thousands as well.
And you also need quality content in your site.

having backlinks isn't enough.

I am pretty sure that having your link on 100 000 spam site will never make you PR6.

Also the age of your site and the length you have had the links for matters.

In other words if you have a website project, one of the first things to do is to choose the domain name and buy it so that your domain is online ASAP.

Even better, try and buy an old domain for a cheap price that matches your niche. For example I bought jinxed.org 100 dollars and got a domain name that's 3 years old.

What can you get with 100 dollars? 5 PR5 backlinks for a month or so? Buying a 3 year old domain is just A LOT MORE interesting.
