Books? Maybe not. I think if you want to learn PHP, go hands-on. I tried (long time ago) learning HTML from the "For Dummies" series, it was informative, but most information didn't stick. I think the best way to learn PHP is to USE PHP. I learnt PHP through playing with it and only checking tutorials when I'm unsure - I've come a long way since then.
Self-taught PHP? I vote YES

Why get a book when you can teach yourself PHP easily, what's more, for free?

That's probably because you haven't really tried. Close all the books / guides and try to code a simple page. That'll get you started!

Well I learnt html and css just by exploring codes. Gradually I'll be trying my hands at php. I know c++ and php is quite similar. I know the basics but never tried to code anything. :P
@ikki - "Close all the books / guides and try to code a simple page. That'll get you started! " I should do this before I get too old. lol
I learned HTML from a website and after that I taught myself, CSS (basics ), JS (basics ), PHP (a lot more then basics ).
I advice you to just try and if you don't know a function or anything, don't be shamed ask it here or check on php.net for an example
So I vote defeniatly Yes for self taught PHP

You definitely have to start by getting hands on in the code. Until you encounter that mysterious coding error that you just HAVE to fix because you're positive you defined the function 10 lines ago, you won't understand the fun of coding!

Exactly!
Coding can teach you a lot of things about perseverance and patience. It can also put a huge amount of stress on your shoulders :P However, as Corey said, it's exciting!
