Well, then the question is how can you get to be "well known" and who and how to define it.
SEO is a big business, it will not die and it's still an very important process to gain free traffic. I remember during a Beavis and Butthead episode that Beavis asked Butthead, why is that woman on TV? Butthead was like,... "ah... ah... cause she's famous." Then Beavis asked, why she's famous? Butthead then said, "ah... ah... cause she's on TV you dumn a==." So... using this analogy... a site still need to be worked on before it can reach to any SEs.
Back to your original question about
SEO Professional, they will still be around and needed, but MANY MANY of them are fake, and totally overpriced.
SEO is not rocket science, just do more reading and observation, you can be a good
SEO over time. The question is that if you have a large web business, it might be cost benefit to hire
SEO to have division of labor so that you can be of more focus on different tasks. So, again... it's all depends
